What is enzyme exfoliation and how does it work?
The enzymes used in enzymatic exfoliants break down proteins. They act on keratin, which makes up the dead cells of the outermost layer of the skin, weakening the bonds that hold them together. The result is that cells that are already dead detach, while the living cells beneath are not affected.
It is worth being honest about one point. Clinical research on cosmetic enzyme exfoliation is still limited, but that enzymes exfoliate is well-documented fact (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2022).
Enzymatic exfoliant vs scrub: what is the difference?
A scrub removes dead cells through mechanical abrasion, and friction does not distinguish between dead cells and healthy skin: on thin or sensitive skin it can create micro-irritation.
An enzymatic exfoliant works biochemically instead, and selectively. It does not scrub: it loosens the bonds holding dead cells together, and they are carried away with a simple rinse.
Enzymatic exfoliant vs chemical exfoliants (AHA and BHA)?
Chemical exfoliants such as glycolic acid (AHA) or salicylic acid (BHA) work by lowering the skin's pH.

Why are enzymatic exfoliants suitable for sensitive skin?
Essentially, because they are gentler.
An enzymatic exfoliant has no sharp edges, as scrub granules do, and it does not lower pH, as an acid does. It acts only where there are dead cells to dissolve, and it stops there.
On top of that, because it does not dissolve the skin's natural lipids and does not alter its pH, it respects the skin barrier more than scrubs and acids, which can weaken it.

Which enzymes actually work?
Papaya, pineapple and pumpkin are the three enzymes most used in enzymatic exfoliants.
Papain, extracted from papaya, is among the most studied enzymes (proteases): it acts on dead cells by breaking down their protein bonds.
Bromelain, from pineapple, works similarly and is valued for its gentleness.
Pumpkin enzymes complete the picture and are often used in formulas designed for more delicate skin.
